Q

What are the ingredients in your treats?

A

Our treats are made from all natural ingredients and do not contain any preservatives or additives. The ingredients consist of spent grain, flour, peanut butter (or bananas, apples or pumpkin or bacon, maple syrup and blueberries) and eggs. Think of it as a crunchy cookie without the sugary taste.

Q

What is spent grain? Where do you get it?

A

Spent grain (or brewers grain) is what is left after the process of germinating dried cereal grains for the production of beer. It is a by-product from the brewing process and can include oats, rye & barley. Spent grains constitute as much as 85 percent of a brewery’s total by-product and is a sustainable item. We get our spent grains from local breweries such as 7vnth Sun, Magnanimous and Woven Water and Barriehause. Sometimes we even use local homebrewer’s grain.

Spent grain has had a long history in animal feeding, dating back to the monks and monasteries that would brew beer and then feed the brewers grain to their livestock.

Q

Where do I order my treats?

A

You can order on this site, email us at craftcaninetreats@gmail.com or message us on Facebook.  You can find our treats at a variety of retailers. Also you can buy treats at one of the events we are at.  Check out the News & Events page to find out where we will be!

Q

What are the benefits to dogs from eating your treats?

A

Spent grain is a great source of protein and fiber, helping with digestion and contributing essential amino acids needed for healthy muscle growth, repair and energy levels. When combined with other human grade ingredients, a healthy, yummy treat is created.
Another benefit of our treats is that part of the proceeds from the purchased treats is donated to local animal organizations. Also, you are enjoying a product that is part of a very resourceful way to reuse materials breweries already have- the picture of upcycling and sustainability. Plus you can enjoy a craft treat while your human parents enjoy a craft beer at a local brewery!

Q

Is there beer in this product?

A

There is no alcohol or hops in our treats. The spent grain is used before fermentation occurs.

Q

Why are my treats different shades of brown?
Why are they different sizes?
What is the white powder on some of them?

a

The treats are made with grains from different types of beer and depending on the style, the grain may be a darker color. The treats are all handmade, using cookie cutters and may not all be the same shape.  Don’t worry-each bag still has 8 oz (or 4 oz) of treats! The white powder is flour that is used to help roll out and shape the dough.

Q

Are the treats crunchy or soft?

A

The treats are very crunchy because of they way we dry them out to avoid using preservatives. Many dogs love the crunchy taste and texture, however, doggies who prefer soft treats due to their dental needs may not be able to eat these. We will let you know when we have a soft treat just for you!

Q

What is the best way to store my treats?

A

Since our treats do not have any preservatives, it is best to store in the refrigerator to extend its shelf life.

Q

What makes the bags so special?

A

Our bags are made from 40% recycled natural kraft paper and lined with EarthFirst, a compostable film Ingeo polymer which is made from annually renewable plants. It is compostable once tin-tie is removed so go ahead and recycle it!

Q

What types of organizations do you support?

A

Our vision is beer to biscuits; kitchen to community so we support organizations who serve as a valuable resource for animals in our local community. We also care about our local environmental community and will partner with those who promote sustainability.  If you have an organization that you feel would fit into this vision and would be a good community partner, please let us know!
